Pet Vaccinations
Timely vaccinations are one of the most effective ways to protect your pet from serious illnesses. At DNA Vetcare, we prioritise preventative care to help your pets stay healthy, happy, and thriving year-round.
Whether you’re caring for a puppy, kitten, or an adult pet, keeping their vaccines up to date safeguards their long-term well-being and helps reduce the spread of contagious diseases in the local community. It’s a simple step that gives you confidence and peace of mind.
Understanding Vaccines and Their Benefits
Vaccinations help protect your pet from serious and potentially life-threatening diseases. At DNA Vetcare, we provide tailored vaccination programs to keep your pet healthy throughout their life.
What it protects against:
Dogs
- Distemper
- Parvovirus
- Hepatitis
- Leptospirosis
- Kennel cough
- Rabies (if required)
Since COVID, we’ve seen an increase in cases of parvovirus, affecting both puppies and older dogs, making vaccination more important than ever.
With more dogs travelling, we’re also occasionally seeing cases of distemper, highlighting the need for comprehensive protection.
Cats
- Feline herpesvirus
- Calicivirus, panleukopenia (feline distemper)
- Rabies (if required)
We’ve also seen a slight increase in cases of FeLV (feline leukemia virus).
Because cats can easily spread infections, vaccinations are very important.
We can tailor the vaccination protocol depending on whether your cat is indoor or outdoor to provide the best protection.
Vaccinations are a key part of preventative care and help ensure your pet stays happy, healthy, and protected.
Vaccination Timings: Puppies, Kittens & Adult Pets
Puppy Vaccinations
Puppies typically begin their vaccination schedule at around 6–8 weeks of age. They receive additional doses every 2–4 weeks, building up full protection a few weeks after the primary course is completed.
Kitten Vaccinations
Kittens generally start vaccinations at about 9 weeks old, depending on their individual health and circumstances. Follow-up doses and boosters are scheduled to ensure lasting immunity.
Adult Pets & Boosters
Adult cats and dogs who haven’t had a complete vaccination history can start a personalised vaccination plan. Even fully grown pets require boosters at regular intervals (some yearly, others every few years), depending on the specific vaccines and diseases being targeted.
What to Expect at a Vaccination Appointment
Every vaccination appointment begins with a thorough health check to make sure your pet is well enough for their vaccine. The injection is usually given just under the skin, often on a dog’s neck or a cat’s scruff or leg, and the process is quick and generally very well tolerated.
You’ll also have time during the appointment to ask any questions, whether you’re curious about possible side effects or want to know which vaccines are most suitable for your pet’s lifestyle and routine.
Some vaccines, such as kennel cough, may be given as a nasal spray rather than an injection, depending on what best meets your pet’s needs.

Why are vaccinations important for my pet?
Vaccinations keep your pet safe from serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. They also help reduce the risk of spreading disease among pets in the local area.
Which vaccines does my dog need?
Most dogs receive vaccines for distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis, and infectious hepatitis. Optional vaccines, such as kennel cough or rabies (for travel purposes), are also available depending on your dog’s lifestyle.
